June Gardening Tips for Fayetteville, NC
Summer is in full swing here in Fayetteville, and your garden knows it! June brings long, sunny days, warm nights, and the perfect opportunity to give your landscape a little extra TLC. Whether you’re growing vegetables, nurturing flower beds, or maintaining your lawn, these June gardening tips will help your yard thrive through the heat.
1. Water Wisely
With the rising temps, proper watering is key. Early morning is the best time to water—before 9 a.m.—to reduce evaporation and give plants time to absorb moisture before the heat sets in. Deep, infrequent watering encourages stronger roots. Don’t forget to check irrigation systems for leaks or clogs and adjust timers as needed.
2. Deadhead & Prune
Keep annuals and perennials looking their best by deadheading spent blooms. This encourages new growth and extends blooming time. You can also lightly prune spring-flowering shrubs now that they’ve finished blooming to shape them up without stressing them in the summer heat.
3. Stay on Top of Veggies
Your summer crops are loving this weather! Tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, and peppers should be producing well by now. Harvest often to encourage more growth. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids and tomato hornworms—early detection makes control easier.
4. Mulch Matters
Add a fresh layer of mulch around garden beds, trees, and shrubs to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pine straw and hardwood mulch are both excellent choices for our area. Aim for a depth of 2–3 inches, but keep mulch a few inches away from stems and trunks.
5. Fertilize with Care
Lawns and many flowering plants benefit from a light feeding in June, but go easy—too much fertilizer in high heat can stress your plants. Choose a slow-release or organic option and always follow label directions.
6. Add Heat-Loving Color
Looking to add more color? June is a great time to plant heat-tolerant annuals like lantana, vinca, marigolds, and zinnias. These thrive in the North Carolina sun and keep your beds bright and cheerful all summer long.
7. Watch for Pests & Disease
Humidity and heat can bring fungal issues and garden pests. Keep an eye out for powdery mildew, blight, and insects. Remove diseased leaves, space plants for air circulation, and consider using natural pest control methods when possible.
