May Garden Tips
Spring has arrived, and we couldn’t be more thrilled! With the warmer weather comes a long to-do list for the garden. But don’t worry; this is the most satisfying part of gardening and yard work. Once you’re finished, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Follow these May garden tips to keep your yard looking its best!
Herbs & Vegetables
Spring is officially here in Fayetteville, NC, so it’s safe to plant your vegetables and herbs! If you haven’t already tilled and added compost to your garden beds, now is the time to amend your soil. We recommend using Daddy Pete’s compost products or Black Kow Composted Cow Manure for the best results.
Don’t Forget the Mulch!
Summer is just around the corner, and with it comes the intense heat! Always finish your planting with a generous layer of mulch. Mulch helps retain moisture after rain or watering and keeps the root ball cooler. It also helps control weeds.
Insect Control
Insects like whiteflies, aphids, and Japanese beetles can be a nuisance. To stay ahead of these pests, apply a granular systemic insecticide to all susceptible plants. This will prevent them from damaging your garden. If you already see insects on your plants, use an insecticidal soap or spray to eliminate them.
Divide and Conquer
Now is the perfect time to divide any herbaceous perennials and grasses that have outgrown their spaces or need replanting in a new area.
Deadhead
To keep your annuals and perennials looking their best, regularly deadhead any spent or finished blooms. You can do this by hand or with a pruner. This will encourage your plants to produce new blooms throughout the season.
