Spring is here, and we couldn’t be more excited! With the warmer weather, comes the long to-do list. But don’t fret, this is the gratifying part of gardening and yard work. Once you are done, sit back, relax, and enjoy your hard work. Follow these May garden tips to stay on top of your yard work!
Herbs & Vegetables
It is officially spring in Fayetteville, NC, so it is safe to plant your vegetables and herbs! If you haven’t already tilled and added compost to your garden beds, be sure to amend your soil. We recommend all of the Daddy Pete’s compost products or Black Kow Composted Cow Manure.
Don’t Forget the Mulch!
Soon, summer will be upon us and with it, comes the blazing heat! It is important to always finish any planting with a generous layer of mulch! Mulch helps retain moisture after a rain or watering and also keeps the root ball cooler. Mulching also helps keep weeds under control.
Insects, insects, insects! Let’s face it, we all dislike whiteflies, aphids, and Japanese beetles to name a few. Be on the lookout for these insects. If you want to stay ahead of the insects, apply a granular systemic insecticide to all susceptible plants. This will prevent them from damaging your plants. If you are not able to do so and begin to see insects feasting on your plants, use an insecticidal soap or spray to eliminate these pests.
Divide and Conquer
Conquer the garden that is! Now is a safe time to divide any herbaceous perennials and grasses that have either gotten too overgrown in their locations or to replant in another area.
To keep your annuals and perennials looking good, continue to deadhead all of the dead or finished blooms. You can use your hands or a pruner. This will allow the plant to continually produce new blooms throughout the season.
