July Garden Tips

Summer has arrived, and we are counting the days until Fall. It is hot and humid, and let’s face it, who wants to do yard work right now? While it may be easy to neglect your yard, these summer months are the most important. Continue reading for all of the pertinent July garden tips!

Mid-Season Feeding

By now, some of your plants may be looking a little tired. Giving your plants some fertilizer or a top dressing of compost wouldn’t hurt! Doing so will boost your plants for the next few months.

Clean up the Plants

Again, if your plants start to look tired, deadheading or light pruning will rejuvenate them, especially when applying fertilizer or compost! Deadheading also causes your perennials to produce more blooms.

Watch out for Pests!

The war on pests has begun. You have probably already noticed more insect activity on and around your plants. It is essential to inspect your plants weekly. If you see signs of pests, apply a systemic insecticide AND an insecticidal soap or spray. The systemic insecticide will continue to kill the pests, and the insecticidal spray will kill the pests on contact. Some common pests that you may see are mealybugs, aphids, whiteflies, Japanese beetles, bagworms, and scale. Staying on top of pest control is critical!

Keep Tabs on Rainfall Amounts

While this tip may not seem significant given the lack of rain in the last week, we see more people overwater during the summer than you would think! It is mainly because summer thunderstorms are unpredictable and can quickly produce two to three inches of rain in one storm! Because of this, investing in a rain gauge is wise so you don’t overwater.

Weed Control

Weed control is still on the to-do list. It may seem as if the weeds are growing faster than your plants! Sometimes it does feel that way. Still, weed control is a necessary evil. Stay on top of it, and it may not seem so daunting!
