Why Fall Is a Great Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs

When most people think about planting trees and shrubs, they immediately think of spring. But here in North Carolina, fall is actually one of our favorite times to make permanent additions to the landscape.
The combination of cooler air temperatures and soil that is still relatively warm creates excellent conditions for establishing many trees and shrubs.
Cooler Weather Means Less Plant Stress
Trying to establish a new plant during the hottest part of a North Carolina summer can be challenging. High temperatures increase water demands and can put additional stress on newly planted trees and shrubs.
As temperatures begin to moderate in the fall, plants aren’t dealing with the same intense summer conditions. This allows them to put more energy toward establishing themselves in their new location.
Warm Soil Encourages Root Development
Even when the mornings and evenings begin feeling cooler, the soil doesn’t immediately become cold. It retains warmth from summer, allowing roots to continue developing well into the fall.
This is one of the big advantages of fall planting. While you may not see a lot happening above ground, the plant can be busy establishing the root system that will support new growth when spring arrives.
Fall Is a Great Time to Evaluate Your Yard
After spending an entire spring and summer in your landscape, you probably have a good idea of what is and isn’t working.
Maybe there’s a patio that could use more privacy. Perhaps an empty corner needs some height or you want more evergreen structure in your flower beds. You may also have an area where a plant simply hasn’t performed as well as you’d hoped.
Fall gives you an opportunity to address those areas and make thoughtful additions to your landscape.
Remember That New Plants Still Need Water
Cooler temperatures don’t mean you can forget about watering. Newly planted trees and shrubs need consistent moisture while they’re establishing their roots, especially during dry periods.
Check the soil regularly and give new plantings a thorough watering when needed. Proper care during those first weeks and months can make a big difference in how well a plant establishes.
Choose the Right Plant for the Right Place
Before choosing a tree or shrub simply because you love how it looks, think about where it will live several years from now. Consider its mature height and width, sunlight requirements, drainage and maintenance needs.
