Caring for Your Amaryllis Bulbs

Amaryllis bulbs are a holiday favorite, bringing bold, beautiful blooms that brighten any space during the winter months. At Green Side Up in Fayetteville, NC, we’re here to guide you through caring for these stunning plants to keep them thriving year after year.

Before They Bloom

If you’ve just received an amaryllis bulb, here’s how to get started:

  1. Planting Your Bulb
    • Choose a pot slightly larger than the bulb, leaving about an inch of space around it.
    • Use well-draining potting soil, and position the bulb so that the top third is above the soil.
  2. Watering
    • Water lightly after planting, and then sparingly until you see growth. Overwatering can cause the bulb to rot.
  3. Light and Warmth
    • Place your pot in a warm, sunny location (like a south-facing window). Amaryllis bulbs need warmth to kickstart their growth.

During Blooming Season

Once your amaryllis begins to grow, it’s time to enjoy the show!

  1. Water Regularly
    • Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Check the top inch of soil—if it’s dry, it’s time to water.
  2. Support the Stalks
    • The flowers can get top-heavy, so you might need a stake or support to keep the stems upright.
  3. Rotate the Pot
    • Turn the pot every few days to ensure even growth and prevent the stalk from leaning toward the light.

After Blooming

Once the flowers fade, your amaryllis isn’t done yet! With proper care, it can bloom again next season.

  1. Deadheading
    • Remove spent flowers to prevent the plant from putting energy into seed production.
  2. Keep the Leaves
    • Allow the leaves to remain and continue photosynthesizing. This helps the bulb store energy for next year’s blooms.
  3. Fertilize
    • Apply a balanced fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season to nourish the bulb.

Preparing for Dormancy

In late summer or early fall, your amaryllis will need a rest period:

  • Stop watering and fertilizing.
  • Allow the leaves to yellow and die back naturally.
  • Store the bulb in a cool, dark place (like a basement or garage) for 8–10 weeks.

Replant and Repeat

After dormancy, replant your bulb and start the process over. With each cycle, your amaryllis will reward you with more vibrant blooms!
