All About Orchids

While orchids have the reputation of being finicky and difficult to grow, if equipped with the right information, one can successfully grow orchids without any challenges! Continue reading to learn all about orchids and how to make them thrive inside your home!

Perfect Light

Orchids are plants that are light-hungry! They require a lot of light to grow and thrive. Be sure your orchid receives bright, indirect light for at least 6 hours daily. Be mindful that you may need to change the window where you set your orchid in the winter vs. the summer. As seasons change, so does the light within your home.

Selecting the Correct Container

Selecting the correct container for your orchid is one of the most essential tips to follow. Oftentimes, garden centers sell orchid pots that are made specifically for orchids. Orchid pots have pots throughout the container that allow air to circulate and allow the roots to come out.

Healthy Soil

Orchids thrive best in soils that allow air and water to pass through easily. Orchid mixes often consist of sphagnum moss, charcoal, and perlite. Orchid mix is often sold premade in garden centers, or you can make your own orchid mix.

Correct Watering

There is a misconception that orchids can safely be watered with the use of ice cubes. While this may seem like an easy way to ensure your orchid receives enough water, once the ice melts, the water is still too chilly for the plant. The best way to water an orchid is to soak your plant in a bucket or bowl of water once weekly. Allow the orchid to soak for about 10 – 15 minutes.
